Rosie Red Corsetry & Couture
Name and company: Rosie Dennington, Rosie Red Corsetry & Couture
Where are you based?: Oxford
My gorgeous Femme Phenomenal this week is a very inspiring young woman called Rosie Dennington, founder and couturier of Rosie Red Corsetry & Couture. Not only is she the loveliest most wonderful bundle of fun she is super talented, only 23 and has hit the ground running after dressing Helena Bonham Carter in a shoot for Vanity Fair shot by Mario Testino #winning. Her work is magical, feminine and caters to anyone looking for a fantastical piece to wear for their wedding or important event. You MUST check out her work, even just if for divine inspiration.
NDA: Tell me a little bit about your business and what was the impetus to startup?
RRC: I make bespoke bridal and event wear, couture and corsetry. I make fantasy pieces for people looking for luxury fashion.
I think I chose the bridal route as I have found that women often want something more fantastical and a little bit more out there than pieces you can find on a rail. I have always wanted to be a fashion designer.
NDA: Where are your products available?
RRC: They are available online. The best thing to do is to find my contact details on my website and get in touch from there. Then we organise a one on one design consultation. After this we arrange a meeting at my studio in Oxford. My catchment area is worldwide. I actually have someone flying over from Switzerland this weekend to have their wedding dress fitted. I’ve done work with a woman from America. A lot of fittings can be done online and via post.
NDA: What is your biggest achievement so far?
RRC: Well, last year I got to dress Helena Bonham Carter for Vanity Fair…and was named her new favourite young designer and now I feel I have a lot to live up to.
NDA: After seeing you work I am not surprised at all as she is a perfect for for the work you do and I can definitely envisage her in your clothes. What was it like working with her, it must have been a pretty interesting experience?
RRC: Yeah, It was incredible, I don’t follow celebrity culture, ready beauty magazine etc however, she is a person I have always wanted to dress. I admire her personality and her ethos, which is wear things you love to wear for yourself and not for her people.
NDA: What is the toughest decision you had to make in the last few months?
RRC: The toughest decision has been, don’t look for jobs anymore, you can do this, you are not too young or inexperienced to do this. I think when you take the plunge with anything you just need to follow it through.
NDA: What’s the best piece of advice you have been given?
RRC: Wow, I think if you are having a bad day, embrace that bad day. It’s ok to think that tomorrow is going to be a better day.
NDA: Many people only contemplate setting up their own business, what advice would you give to spark the catalyst?
RRC: As cliché as it sounds you have to have a dream and follow it. Don’t look as it as an easy option and know that it will be so much more worthwhile if you do decide to follow it through.
NDA: What do you do to stay active?
RRC: I love swimming, I am a mermaid, walking and I really like being outside. I have a minor obsession with trees…which I have started using as hangers for my garments in shoots.
NDA: Do you have any favourite tips and tricks to stay healthy and happy everyday?
RRC: Yes, allow yourself to have a bad day. I listen to a lot of music when I am working, which always helps me out. I also think positive mental health is very important, staying positive and having a positive attitude will allow your body to function is a more positive way.
NDA: Do you consider yourself a ‘healthy eater’ and are there habits you wish you could kick?
RRC: I have to be really aware of my nutrition. I think I probably drink too much, although I don’t really want to kick that at the moment, plus I have regular check-ups and my liver a in great condition. Oh, Diet Coke…I drink a lot of diet coke.
NDA: Well, you are super young still so no worries at the moment.
NDA: What is your typical…
- - Breakfast: Veggie saussages, I am vegetarian.
- - Lunch: Rice and vegetables, great to keep me going through the afternoon and a diet coke too.
- - Dinner: It varies, I love cooking…I could eat Halloumi and stuffed peppers everyday and feta (NDA: winning)
NDA: Lastly, how lucky are you and why?
RRC: I really believe that you make your own luck. My friend is really into the ‘law of attraction where positive attracts positive’. I have been lucky with my opportunities because I haven’t limited myself and I have worked really hard. The sky is the limit.
