Name and company : Rosie Broad, Tinct Bags
Website : www.tinct-uk.com
Where are you based? : Chichester, West Sussex
NDA : Tell me a little bit about your business and what was the impetus to startup?
I run a luxury leather handbag company with my brother Ben, down in West Sussex. Making has always been in my blood, and as I was growing up I sensed my interests shifting from being a hands on, up to my eyeballs in feathers and glue creative, to someone who designs and consults throughout the creative process of creating new products and building a brand. Deciding to start a business and going through the Princes Trust exploring enterprise scheme has helped me to harness both skills I was aware of having, but also forced me to discover and nurture ones I had not explored, mostly the business side of things! I can design and creatively build TINCT as a brand and at the same time pin down all the essential, but sometimes tiresome paperwork. Starting a business has been a very eye opening journey for me!
NDA : Is there a strong ethos you have founded your brand upon with regards to the products you make?
TB : We believe it’s so important to support industry on our home turf. We have the infrastructure from the UK’s industrious past, so in my eyes it just makes sense to not outsource the actual production of our products. We love being involved in the process, and keeping an eye on quality control ourselves, so working with the factory in Somerset means we can pop down when an issue arises, or when we want to go through product development.
On the other hand, we source our leather from Italy, and the reason we do this is because the traditional vegetable tanned leathers in the colours we need are not available in the UK. The raw hides are sourced from farms with high ethical farming standards, so we also know that the skins will be in top condition as the cows would have been well kept and looked after.
NDA : Where are your products available?
TB : Our products are available online on our website, www.tinct-uk.com. This Autumn the collection is going in to The Conran Shop, in both the London and Paris stores, as well as online in France and the UK. We will also be included in The Conran Shop pop up in Selfridges this Christmas, which is very exciting, albeit very nerve wracking.
NDA : What is your biggest achievement so far?
TB : Getting our products in to the Conran Shop!
NDA : What’s the best piece of advice you have been given?
TB : My Pops always says "enjoy each day". So, appreciate the everyday achievements, the little things that have happened. It’s very easy to get overwhelmed with the big picture and the end goal, and what we must remember is the adventure of getting to that place?!
NDA : Many people only contemplate setting up their own business, what advice would you give to spark the catalyst?
TB : Do your research, explore your options and be realistic before taking the leap.Sometimes over enthusiasm without being pragmatic burns out quickly. I am fortunate enough to be able to live at home with my Dad and work out of a barn, so my overheads are low, meaning I can put more in to the business. I also work part time in a cafe so I can live a bit. Neither are especially glamorous but there will always be sacrifices to make when you start your business. Hopefully in the long term they will be worth it!!
NDA : What do you do to stay active and how has it changed your life?
TB : I just love exercise! I go to the gym and run with my dog around the fields or down on the beach. Having a dog means I have to walk every day as well. I’ve just got in to a bit of paddle boarding this summer too, and ultimate frisbee - the best game ever! It’s so fun doing a team sport again, which is something I haven’t done since school.
NDA : Do you have any favourite tips and tricks to stay healthy and happy everyday?
TB : Drink lots of water, don’t eat too much sugar, move a bit more and eat a bit less.. Easier said than done...
NDA : Do you consider yourself a ‘healthy eater’ and are there habits you wish you could kick?
TB : I eat pretty healthily, but I drink too much!
NDA : Lastly, how lucky are you, and why?
Very lucky. I have my health, my family, friends, interests and of course, my business!
